Undercover Boss

Russ Faulkner at Your Training Team did a short video clip on leadership lessons we can learn from TV shows and his most recent clip was on “Undercover Boss.”  I often wondered how they could go undercover and not be recognized.  However, they run very big organizations and I guess it is not surprising that they would be known but would not be recognized.  Russ derives two main points from the show, they are:

1. As a leader you can’t get so far removed from the day to day that you loose touch of what goes on in the trenches.
2. You have to explain the “Why’s” behind what you do in order to have progress and ensure execution.

These are extremely important points!  Too often we start something and as it grows we get farther and farther from what the business is all about and get disoriented from what it takes to be successful on the front lines.

Many times we think our people should know what needs to be done and shouldn’t have to be told to do every step.  However, if they don’t understand the basis, the back story, or the “why” we are doing something they will not do what needs to be done.  It is never a waste of time to explain the background and the reason for actions as well as the actions.
